PHYCOCYP

PHYtoplankton responses to organic COntaminants: the role of CYtochrome P450

The main objective of the PHYCOCYP project is to improve the understanding of biotransformation processes and their role in the tolerance of phytoplankton to organic contaminants (OCs). Among the many enzymes involved in the biotransformation of xenobiotics (e.g. pesticides), a key role is played by cytochromes P450 (CYPs). CYPs are present in all life kingdoms and have been extensively studied in higher plants. However, little information is available on the role of CYPs in phytoplankton. Within the framework of the PHYCOCYP project, a first screening will determine whether the expression of CYP genes is conserved in different classes of phytoplankton exposed to different modes of action of OCs. The involvement of CYPs in the biotransformation of COs will then be evaluated for a model species of phytoplankton using physiological, genetic (in collaboration with UMR 7141 IBPC, Paris) and metabolomic approaches (in collaboration with HydroSciences, Montpellier).
