The IJL TAPIOCA brings together the IRD, the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), in association with 10 other Brazilian federal universities. It addresses issues of national and international interest: climate change, conservation of biodiversity, fisheries as a source of income, food security and the traditions of riverine communities. It acts as an umbrella for a variety of national and international projects, promoting complementarity, networking and interdisciplinarity.
TAPIOCA has a structure based on three interrelated axes:
- Axis 1 ˝Climate and Dynamics of the Tropical Atlantic' focuses on the study of the impact of climate and human pressures on the physical processes that govern the dynamics of coastal and oceanic water masses.
- Axis 2 ˝Dynamics of Biodiversity' aims at understanding biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.
- Axis 3 ˝ Uses and impacts' focuses on the uses and impacts of global environmental pressures, such as pollution, on the marine environment.
