Today, 10 October 2023, the winners of the France 2023 L'Oréal-UNESCO Young Talent Award for Women in Science have been announced, Giulia CHELONI from MARBEC UMR is the winner in the "Biodiversity, Ecology and Climate Change" group, for her research entitled "Deciphering the interactions between phytoplankton and pollution".

Giulia CHELONI coordinates the PHYCOCYP project "PHYtoplankton responses to organic COntaminants: the role of CYtochrome P450", funded by the EU, H2020-EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant.
The PHYCOCYP project aims to improve our understanding of the processes behind the biotransformation of organic contaminants (OCs) into less toxic compounds because Researchers will investigate whether CYP genes expression is conserved in different phytoplankton classes exposed to OCs with different modes of action. The project's results will help evaluate the potential impact of OCs on phytoplankton and the implementation of biotransformation processes for OC removal and pollution remediation.

This year, the L'Oréal Foundation, in partnership with the French Academy of Sciences and the French National Commission for UNESCO, is awarding the Jeunes Talents Pour les Femmes et la Science France 2023 prize to 35 young women researchers, with the aim of supporting them, giving them visibility and backing their research. To inspire future generations, a meeting between these 35 prize-winners and secondary school students from Île-de-France will be held at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie on 12 October. 20 doctoral students and 15 post-doctoral students in France were selected from 618 eligible applications by a jury of excellence made up of 32 researchers from the French Academy of Sciences, chaired by Professor Patrick Flandrin, Director of Research at the CNRS and outgoing President of the French Academy of Sciences.
