Participation of the MARBEC UMR in the TREC project - Traversing European Coastlines

As part of the TREC project designed by the EMBL - European Molecular Biology Laboratory, in collaboration with the Tara Océans consortium, the Tara Océan Foundation and over 90 scientific institutions including Ifremer, the Ifremer station in Sète welcomed members of the scientific expedition on 3 April 2024, and took part in the sampling operations.

The aim of the project is to study the biodiversity and molecular adaptability of microbial communities and selected key organisms:

  • by simultaneous sampling at the land-sea interface,
  • on land, with EMBL's mobile laboratories,
  • and at sea with the schooner Tara.

The researchers are collecting biological samples and environmental data along the European coastline on more than 120 land-sea transects. The TREC expedition began in April 2023 and is scheduled to last until the end of July 2024.

On 3 April 2024, scientists from Ifremer Occitanie (LER LR/MARBEC) took part in water and sediment sampling in the Thau lagoon by diving aboard a boat from the Ifremer station in Sète. At the same time, a second MARBEC team, working with scientists from the expedition, took plant, soil and aerosol samples.
