Data processing and visualization workshops in Indonesia

One of the great challenges in science is translating complex results into digestible outputs for non-scientific audiences. Training in data science approaches is essential for scientists to process and visualize data effectively and efficiently.

As part of his long-term mission, Davide Thambithurai, IRD postdoctoral researcher in MARBEC, alongside local partners, conducted a series of workshops, between June 25 and July 9, at two institutions in Indonesia: Udayana University and
BRIN Gondol. The aim of the workshops was to enhance the skills of students, technicians, and researchers in data science methodologies.

The workshops focused on fisheries data and encouraged participants to discuss their own data challenges. The sessions included presentations and interactive tutorials, providing participants with hands-on experience in data processing and visualization techniques. By addressing real-world data issues, the workshops aimed to foster practical skills and improve data literacy among the participants.

Training was carried out in partnership with the host institutions and focused on data management and analysis in R, using leading packages such as ggplot2, dplyr, and tidyr. More than 50 participants attended the workshops over four days of training.

Two doctoral students and one Master's student, co-supervised by IRD and BRIN, took part as trainers. These workshops have helped strengthen research capacity and contribute to long-lasting building in an important partner in the Global South for IRD.
