SEATIZEN project: winner of the 2025 Open Science Award

6 February 2026

For the fourth edition, the Ministry of Higher Education presented the Open Science Awards for research data, free research software and theses: The Seatizen project – Coral Reef Ecosystem Imagery Data – won in the category ‘Creating the conditions for reuse’. It collects and makes available, with a solid implementation of FAIR principles, imaging data on coral ecosystems for the purpose of monitoring changes in biodiversity. The data is standardised, georeferenced and shared with the scientific community and the general public for a variety of uses, including AI models. The Seatizen project is the result of a collaboration between the Ifremer Indian Ocean Delegation, UMR MARBEC, LIRMM and INRIA, and has received funding from Ifremer, INRIA, IRD and CNRS.

The data acquired through this project was used in Matteo Contini's thesis, who had the honour of receiving the award in Paris.

To meet the objectives set, the SEATIZEN project began with a pilot phase in La Réunion to test the equipment, establish data flows and carry out initial data processing.
During this period, actions relating to knowledge acquisition were carried out:

  • Automatic recognition of species present in images (deep learning).
  • Development of low-cost sensors and platforms.
  • Web interface for annotating the images collected.
  • Mapping of the lagoons of Réunion (bathymetry, habitats, sensitive species).
