At a time when barely 3% of the oceans are properly protected, Philippe CURY, IRD Research Director at MARBEC, is advocating the development of fully protected reserves close to the continents, and not mainly on the high seas. These marine areas restore marine biodiversity and generate additional fish production. They also mitigate climate change, protect coastal areas and enhance carbon sequestration by marine organisms.
