In Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a team of scientists from the SEAMAP project has located the wreck of the trawler “Ravenel”, which has been missing for 63 years

On a mission to Saint-Pierre et Miquelon to study the seabed, a scientific team located the wreck of the trawler “Ravenel”, which disappeared in 1962 off the archipelago, killing 15 sailors and putting an end to 63 years of searching and questioning!
On May 22, during the AUV-SEAMAP scientific deployment campaign in the waters off Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, on the advice of Karl BEAUPERTHUIS, captain of the Martin Hélène, Quentin TATIBOUET and Charles GOUDAERT of SEABER,
Marieke SCHULTZ (UM, MARBEC), Adrien BERNE and Laurent CHAUVAUD of CNRS-LEMAR, discovered a wreck at a depth of 122m.
On May 28, new images taken with SEABER's AUV-SCAN, showed numerous matches with the boat's characteristics. An identification of the wreck was carried out by the CERES company. This confirmed the suspicion that the wreck found last May was indeed that of the Ravenel!

The SEAMAP 2030 project will develop an open-source oceanographic database, including cartographic (physical, magnetic) and biological (thanks to environmental DNA) data, based on existing solutions proposed by SEABER in terms of micro-AUV (Seabed 2030). “The particularity of this project is that it involves two laboratories and a private sector,” notes Marieke SCHULTZ, the project's sole doctoral student, attached to MARBEC and supervised by David MOUILLOT (UM, MARBEC).
