Premiere of "Of Roots and Sea" at Earth University - Dance and science combine to raise awareness of mangroves

Steps For A Change (SFAC), a dance company of 15 young dancers aged 7 to 17, premiered its new show Of Roots and Sea at the 7th edition of the University of the Earth which took place at UNESCO on November 25 & 26, 2022, to a packed house of nearly 1400 spectators at both performances. Co-conceived by Yunne-Jai Shin (MARBEC) and the Montpellier-based choreographer Emily Lartillot, the show illustrates the multiple roles and facets of mangrove ecosystems, at the interface between land, sea and sky. The soundtrack includes acoustic recordings of aerial and underwater mangrove ambiences made available to SFAC by Frédéric Bertucci (MARBEC) and Timothée Brochier (UMMISCO). A film of the show is online on the YouTube channel of IRD.

Of Roots and Sea was co-financed by UNESCO, the EMBracing the Ocean programme of the European Marine Board, the University of Montpellier and its Sea & Coast Key Initiative, IRD and the Planet@liment project, and finally Pew Charitable Trusts.
